- Caption
- Jermaine Gibbs photographed this image on April 25, 2015, two days before Freddie Gray’s funeral. The photograph captures demonstrators engaged in peaceful protests at the corner of Pennsylvania and North Avenues in Baltimore, ground zero for Freddie Gray uprisings. While the photo suggests protesters turned their backs to police officers as an act of defiance, that was not the case. The demonstrators stood in courage and solidarity, linking arms to create a buffer of peace between police officers and a community of protesters standing outside the camera’s view. As the photographer points out, an individual’s perspective and point of view determines how they interpret art, life, and humanity. “When we change the way we see,” says Gibbs, “everything we see will change.”
