Description
A framed coverlet counterpane fragment.
The weaving fragment is made of tan and black thread and is in a geometric pattern with ovals, diamonds, and grids. It is in the shape of a long rectangle. The four edges are frayed and have some loose threads. The coverlet counterpane fragment is mounted on a beige board. The board is in a black wooden frame and is covered by glass. There is white writing on the bottom edge of the frame. It reads [R472].
The back side has a brown pieces of board covering the frame. There are several torn pieces of tape on the board and parts of the board are peeling. There is a rectangular white pieces of paper taped to the center of the board. It has black text on it which reads [R 472 COVERLET (counterpane, fragment) / Coverlet was made by slaves on a hand loom. Slaves were owned by Dr. Littleberry Forée (son of Peter (Pierre) Forée, Revolutionary soldier of French Huguenots with Lafayette.) / Dr. Littleberry Forée and his wife Polly owned a plantation "STORM HILL" near New Castle, Henry County, Kentucky where the coverlet was made. / Fragment presented to OSM by 3rd great granddaughter of Col. Forée. / Ca. 19th century].
There is a faded label below the paper. It contains the Old Slave Mart Museum in black text. There are metal twisted wires attached near the top of the frame with metal fasteners.
