- Description
- A brick, made by an enslaved person, from an unknown architectural structure in Charleston, South Carolina. It is a solid style, fired brick. The rectangular brick is dark reddish brown in color with surfaces and edges that are heavily worn. There is a significant loss at one of the headers. The Old Slave Mart Museum catalog number, [R159], is handwritten in black ink over a small rectangular patch of white paint along the stretcher edge of one of the brick’s faces. The same face is also covered with a thick layer of sand and lime mortar. The other face, headers, and stretchers also have smaller mortar surface deposits. On one header side are small bright white surface deposits running down the center.
