- Description
- A pantile made by an enslaved person from Boone Hall Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina. The pantile is constructed from terracotta and coated in a black glaze. The tile has an S-shaped profile, mainly concave with a smaller convex lip on one side. The decorative side of the tile is almost entirely coated in a shiny black glaze. The glaze has chipped off the surface from the top left corner to just right of center along the top edge. The top third of tile has tan mortar accretions on the surface. There is a loss at the top right corner of the tile and at the diagonally opposed corner. The Old Slave Mart Museum catalog number, [R653], is handwritten in black ink over a small rectangular patch of white painted at the top right corner of the decorative side of the tile. The back of the tile is primarily terracotta red with a black rectangular discoloration at the center and a small rectangular protrusion at the top. The surface is roughly textured. Patches of white salt efflorescence coat the surface.
