Description
Carte-de-visite of Charles Dickens shown in half portrait. Dickens is seated and turned one quarter to his left with head turned in profile showing the right side of his face. He is balding and the hair on top of his head is combed over. He has a mustache and a long goatee. Dickens wears a dark jacket with black velvet lapels, a black velvet vest, and white shirt, and a dark necktie. A tie pin is placed near his front neck and a watch chain is visible across his vest. There is a border printed in gold ink surrounding the outside edges of the card mount.
Below the photo is printed [CHARLES DICKENS. / Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1867, by J. / GURNEY & SON, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southern District of New York. / J. Gurney & Son. Photo. N.Y.]. The back of the photograph features J. Gurney & Son's mark printed in purple ink inside a gold printed frame.
The photograph is housed in the album 2017.30. The album page has a triple-lined, gold border framing the print. Handwritten in graphite inside the bottom border of the printed frame of the album page is the text "Dickens". Handwritten in the lower left corner of the album page in graphite is the text "J Gurney & Son, 1867 / 107 Broadway".
