Description
Albumen print stereograph titled [No. 2594 "Contrabands" made happy by employment as army teamsters. This shows a glimpse of their first "free" home; being their winter quarters near City Point, Va.] from the series [1861-1865 The War for the Union: --Photographic History] published by John C. Taylor. The streograph images depict eight men standing in a line looking directly at the camera. The men wear a variety of uniforms and all are wearing hats. The men stand in front of a large wagon with wheels visible. Behind the wagon is a building with its door open that wraps around to the proper right and can be seen behind the wagon. On the bottom left photograph on the left [3594] is handwritten in graphite. The photographs are attached to a yellow mount. On each side on the photographs are printed text that reads on the left, [THE WAR FOR THE UNION.] and on the right, [PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY.] On the back of the stereograph, across the top, is the title/caption. In the center is the series title, [1861. THE WAR FOR THE UNION:--PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY. 1865]. Two paragraphs follow explaining the increase in price because many of the photographs from this era have been destroyed. At the bottom left the image is [copyrighted]. The publisher is printed on the right, [JOHN C. TAYLOR, NO. 17 ALLEN PLACE, HARTFORD, CONN.]
