- Description
- This is the 12th issue of BLK magazine published November 1989. On the front cover, there is an image of Jewel Williams. Williams wears a sweater over a patterned blouse. At top left, [BLK] is printed in large, bold, white uppercase letters within a red rectangular textbox. There are 34 numbered pages, with articles, advertisements, classifieds, black and white photographs, and cartoon illustrations throughout.
- Under the heading [WORD UP] there are two short news editorials: [Exit Lines] is about misogynist lyrics in a record by the hip-hip group 2 Live Crew, and [Getting Schooled] is about racist and homophobic language used by Geraldo Rivera and Schoolly D, respectively. This is followed by the calendar section [BLK BOARD] and the BLK masthead.
- The cover story, which begins on page 7 and ends on page 9, is entitled [The Many Facets of Jewel / Black lesbian becomes successful Southern / Californnia {sic} businesswoman] and is a profile of Catch One club-owner Jewel Williams. One quote from the interview is printed in a larger font. It reads [The fire marshals and police recognized the m.o. used to start the fire and declared that it was arson after a brief investigation. The morning after the fire, Jewel received a huge cash offer to sell the property.].
