- Caption
- Abstract artist Sam Gilliam began his professional career in 1962 when he moved to Washington, D.C. He soon joined a group of D.C.-based painters, the Washington Color School, who used various techniques to explore color and spatial relationships on large-format canvases. Although Gilliam has worked in a wide variety of artistic styles, he is best known for developing the groundbreaking technique of painting on large sheets of unstretched canvas draped from walls and ceilings.
- Description
- Painting by Sam Gilliam. The abstract painting has rays running between the lower left and upper right corners. To the upper left of the rays, the canvas is darker, primarily done in shades of green. There is a yellow portion in the center. Extending out from this light center are red clouds of color with yellow paint splatter. The lower left edge has an area of lime green below the red strokes. The painting has a thin, undecorated frame and a backing board over the reverse. There is an identifying label from the Corcoran Gallery of Art on the backing.
