- Description
- A receipt for an enslaved man named "Old Man Sam" and his enslaved wife, Lucy, for $504.00, dated January 14, 1853. The sale was made by slave traders Pulliam & Davis of Richmond, Virginia on the behalf of Stapleton C. Sneed of Nelson County, Virginia. The receipt is handwritten in black ink on a single piece of white paper that has been folded into eighths. The text written on front of the receipt, at the top, reads [Sale made by Pulliam & Davis for account / of Stapleton C. Sneed]. Just below is the line item for the sale with text that reads [1853 / January 14 Old Man Sam & Wife Lucy 504]. Below top line item are paid line items that include the amount received, a 2.5% commission for the sale, the cost of the baggage transportation, and the total amount due. At the bottom of the receipt is a tally of the 2.5% commission. On the back of the receipt, written inside one of the folded boxes, is black ink text that reads [Pulum [sic] & Davis / Sales of / Sam & Lucy]. The yellowed paper has browned along the edges and fold marks. The center fold is partially split.
