Description
A four page Spanish language manuscript handwritten in ink describing the sale of two enslaved men in colonial New Spain’s Cuidad de Los Angeles (today Puebla, Mexico). The first and fourth page are stamped with two seals in the upper left cover and have four lines of printed text as the heading. The left margin on all pages is left blank and there is minor wear around the pages.
The manuscript contains two documents. The first two pages describe the bill of sale for Miguel and last two pages for Juan, both who were said to have been of Arará ethnicity and 20 years of age. The enslaved men were sold to Don Nicolás Soltero Castaneda by the factors Francisco Arias de Viveros and Sebastián de Velasco, representative merchants of Domingo Grillo and heirs of Ambrocio Lomelin. Each man was sold for 415 common gold pesos (currency). The documents are dated April 26, 1670 and are signed by Francisco Arias de Viveros and Nicolas Álvarez, a public notary.
