Description
A four page, loose leaf Spanish language manuscript handwritten in ink describing the sale of one enslaved woman and a transfer of authority at the Convent of Santo Domingo in colonial New Spain (today Mexico). The manuscript contains two documents split on the second page. The first and third page are numbered in the upper right corner. The first page is stamped with two seals in the upper left corner and three lines of printed text as the heading. The fourth page is blank and there is minor wear around the pages. Both documents are dated February 1724 and signed by the public notary, Lucas de Ruvilla.
The first document describes the bill of sale of María de la Cruz of 29 years of age. The enslaved woman was sold to Doña Mariana Fernandes de Masilla by Captain Juan Frenero Trujillo for 320 common gold pesos (currency). At the top center on the first page are five names handwritten: [Jesus Joachín María y Anna y Joseph]. On the left margin of the first page are three handwritten notes. From top to bottom they are: [Venta mínuta a esta / ciudad en 1 de febrero / de 1724], [pezein esta minuta / collazos], and [fch dia de su fha / en el pliega del sello / segundo de que doy / fee = / Ruvilla].
The second document describes a meeting of the council of the Convent of Santo Domingo in the province of San Miguel to approve an act to transfer authority from the deceased Friar Manuel de Esquedas to Friar Francisco de Leon. On the second page along the left margin are two hand written notes. Starting at the mid page, they are: [poder en 5 de febrero / de 1724 años] and [fho dia de su fecha / en el pliego del sello / quatro de que doy y fee / Ruvilla].
