- Description
- A sepia tone albumen photograph of a photomechanical newspaper image capturing the grand jury that indicted Jefferson Davis.
- Captioned at the top of the heavily faded image is: [THE GRAND JURY / This is the Grand Jury that indicted Mr. Davis, and was the first mixed jury ever impanelled in this country]. The image depicts two rows of men, one row seated and the second row standing behind the first. Of note are the five African American jurors: Cornelius Liggan Harris (seated, third from right); Dr. Fields Cook (standing, 2nd from left); John Oliver (seated, far left); George Seaton (standing, 5th from right); George W. Simms (standing, far right); and Rosina Beckley (standing, 4th from left). The photograph is mounted on a card with decorative scalloped edges on all four sides with smooth corners. There are no inscriptions or markings on the reverse of the card.
