- Description
- A sepia tone photographic postcard of a standing woman posing with a chair. The photograph is in portrait orientation. The woman is shown from the knees up, with her body turned towards the left edge of the image in three-quarters pose, and her face turned towards the viewer. Her head is slightly tilted towards her proper left shoulder and she has a small smile on her face. The woman is wearing a light tone, Edwardian style day dress with a wide lace collar with scalloped edges and a lace jabot. The dress features two, long, vertical rows of large, decorative, dark buttons running down from the shoulders and over the front of the skirt. The buttons are spaced out along two vertical lines of dark piping that runs the length of the dress. The sleeves of the dress end at the elbows and her hands and forearms are encased in white, elbow length dress gloves. She is wearing a matinee length, graduated, round, dark bead necklace and a medium tone, Edwardian, wide band picture hat decorated with dark ribbons, feathers, and brooch pins. The woman’s proper right hand is resting on the high back of a wooden chair and she is clasping a purse with a short strap in her proper left hand. In the background is a cloudy, photographic backdrop. The image is centered inside a feathered oval with cream colored edges. There are significant losses at the top left and bottom right and left corners. There are also pinholes at the top and bottom center and in the top right corner. The reverse has a landscape orientation and is white with black ink text. The text [POST CARD] is written in outlined letters across the top with black text below that reads [ATLANTIC CITY SOUVENIR]. Below are sections for [CORRESPONDENCE] on the left, and [ADDRESS] on the right divided by a short vertical line down the center. Printed vertically along the left edge is the photographer’s name and a partial address: [PHILLIPS’S STUDIO, 16[---?]]. At the top right is an AZO stamp box. The postcard is blank.
