- Description
- A black-and-white photograph, Untitled (Man smoking in a Ballroom), by Kwame Brathwaite. The photograph depicts a man seated on a folding chair, with his back to the viewer. His proper left elbow is propped on the backrest of the folding chair next to him and he is cradling the back of his head with his proper left hand. His face is turned slightly right, facing the front of the ballroom, and he is smoking a black, Apple style pipe with a metal band around the base of the shank. Smoke curls from the top of the pipe bowl. He is wearing a light toned, corduroy jacket, a collared shirt, and has a plain metal band on the ring finger of his proper left hand. In the background on the left, are other people seated in the rows in front of smoking man and two blurred individuals stand behind a square column at the center of the image. In the background on the left are stored and stacked pieces of furniture and a wall with long curtain panels. Above the smoking man are three rows of round ceiling fixtures. There are no marks or inscriptions, front or back.
