- Description
- A first edition, hardcover book (a) with a removable dust jacket (b) of the cookbook Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine by sisters Norma Jean Darden and Carole Darden. The front inside flap of the dust jacket was detached from the rest of the dust jacket but was fixed by NMAAHC conservation in 2021-2022. The dust jacket features a color photograph of the two sisters standing amid foliage in front of a white picket fence. Both sisters wear white dresses with blue flower print aprons. The sister on the left holds a basket of produce and the sister on the right holds a sunhat and a small bouquet of flowers. At their feet is another basket of produce and a cut watermelon. The photograph wraps around the entire jacket, front and back. Large white text on the front reads [SPOONBREAD / AND / STRAWBERRY / WINE / NORMA JEAN / AND CAROLE / DARDEN / RECIPES AND / REMINISCENCES OF / A FAMILY]. Smaller white text on the back provides a brief summary of the book. There is an inscription on the inside page that reads [Happy Cooking! / The Darden Sisters]. The contents of the book are organized into chapters centered on a member of the Darden family and a type of recipe, including "Papa Darden: Wines," "Aunt Maude: Candy and Confections," and "Granddad Sampson: Honey Foods." Included are menus and recipes for holidays ("Fourth-of-July picnic," "Christmas and 'Dairy' Dishes), menus for dinner parties ("Dinner Menu for 10, plus Company Pies") and a section on "Funerals." The book has 288 pages.
