- Photographer Tommy Oliver is an award-winning producer and cinematographer in television and film. Best known for his 2020 documentary 40 Years a Prisoner on HBO, his docuseries Black Love (2017–2020) on OWN, and his feature film The Perfect Guy (2015), Oliver challenges audiences to question their assumptions about race, gender, and family. The film Kinyarwanda (2011), which Oliver co-produced, weaves together narratives of resilience during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. It won the Sundance Film Festival’s award for World Cinema Drama and was recognized as one of the top 10 films of 2011. This photograph is part of a broader portfolio of images taken during Black Lives Matter rallies in Los Angeles between May 31 and June 14, 2020.
- Description
- A digital, black-and-white image of Wakiesha Wilson’s mother, Lisa Hines, and an unidentified female protester standing in a crowd of protesters and photographers at a Black Lives Matter - Los Angeles protest against District Attorney Jackie Lacey in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The image was taken by Tommy Oliver during the protests that followed the death of George Floyd. The woman on the right is physically supporting Hines on the left. Both women are depicted from the waist up. The woman on the right has her back to the viewer and is facing Hines. Her proper right arm is supporting Hines’ back. She is wearing a light tone, short-sleeve T-shirt with a plain back. Her braided hair is pulled up into a high ponytail. She is also wearing a cloth face mask over her nose and mouth and has a dark purse strap over her proper left shoulder. Hines is standing with her body turned towards the viewer and her face turned towards the left edge of the image. She is wearing a white surgical mask and is cupping her proper right hand over her mask-covered nose and mouth. Her chin is tilted slightly downwards, her eyes are closed, and she has a distressed expression on her face. Her proper left arm is raised up and out to her side. Her braided hair is pulled back and she is wearing a wide headband over her forehead. Hines is also wearing a bandana tied around her neck, and a light tone, short-sleeve memorial t-shirt with a portrait of a young man and the words "Long Live." In the background, is a group of protesters and photographers with their cameras aimed at the pair of women. Most of them are wearing face masks. In the bottom left corner is a young man kneeling on the ground with his head down and his proper right fist raised above his head in a Black Power stance. On the far right, is an unidentified male protester dressed in black clerical attire with a collar and wearing a white face mask and a pectoral cross.
