- Description
- A color photograph titled “Kharmony, LA Pride, Los Angeles, CA 2020,” by Stephanie Mei-Ling. The photograph, taken at the All Black Lives Matter protest in Los Angeles on June 14, 2020, depicts protestor Kharmony Fortune. Fortune is centrally depicted and is shown from the waist up. She is facing the viewer with her arms are held akimbo. She is wearing turquoise blue bottoms and a white, cropped tank top with the text [PRIDE] printed across the chest in large, rainbow striped letters. She is also wearing a large, wire wrapped, green stone pendant around her neck, a pair of yellow mirrored sunglasses tucked into her waistband, and a protective facemask over the lower half of her face. The face mask is heavily beaded with diagonal, rainbow stripes made from stitched seed beads. Each color stripe is divided by a thin black stripe of seed beads. The beading terminates in beaded rainbow fringe around the bottom edge of the mask. Her hair is arranged into seven Bantu knots. One knot, above her proper left ear, is embellished with a cowrie shell. Fortune is standing next to a partially visible tree trunk next to her proper left arm. In the background is a paved street lined with low rise buildings, parked cars, and trees. A large white sign covering one storefront window reads [BLM] next to a heart symbol. The back of the photograph is white and plain.
