Description
A hardcover first edition of Working with the Hands, written by Booker T. Washington and illustrated by Frances Benjamin Johnston. The front cover is burgundy with gold silt lettering on the cover and spine. The title on the cover is centered at the top, reading [WORKING WITH HANDS / BOOKER T. WASHINGTON]. On the spine, the title is at the top, [WORKING / WITH THE HANDS / BOOKER T. / WASHINGTON] and the publisher is at the bottom, [DOUBLEDAY / PAGE & CO.]
The title page is printed in black text. From the top, the original printing reads [WORKING / WITH THE HANDS / BEING A SEQUAL TO “UP FROM SLAVERY” / COVERING THE AUTHOR’S / EXPEREINCES IN INDUSTRIAL / TRAINING AT TUSKEGEE / By / BOOKER T. WASHINGTON]. In similar copies, this is typically followed by [illustrated from photographs by Frances Benjamin Johnston]. However, this copy appears to have been scratched out (?). In its place is a black ink stamp with a top and bottom border reading [learning resources]. Underneath is a printed crest with a wreath at the top, a book at the center, and ribbons at the bottom reading, the publisher’s logo at the time. At the bottom printed in black ink is the publisher information [NEW YORK / DOUBLEDAY, PAGE & COMPANY / 1904]. In the bottom right corner is text stamped in black ink reading [MOUNT ST. AGNES LIBRARY / MOUNT WASHINGTON, MARYLAND].
