Description
A newspaper published by the Design as Protest (DAP) Collective featuring the title graphic “YOU ARE A(NTI) RACIST.” The top half of the newspaper’s front page features a large black block with large white text that reads [YOU / ARE / A / RACIST] in white text with the letters “NTI” added in dark grey to turn the “A” into the word “ANTI.” In the upper right corner of the black block, in small white text, is [DAP / COLLECTIVE]. The bottom half of the front page, on the left side in large black text, describes the DAP as “an anti-racist, non-hierarchical, action-based collective dedicated to advancing Design Justice in the built environment” illustrated by a graphic with the title [DAP BIG / PICTURE / HOW DOES IT ALL COME TOGETHER]. The right side contains a feature story by a DAP contributing member and there is a quick-response (QR) code at the bottom left side of the page. Along the bottom of the page is a narrow, horizontal black block listing in white text the names of DAP contributing members, a design that is repeated on several pages throughout the issue. Content of the subsequent pages include a chronology of systemic racism, resources, a list of the Collective’s nine Design Justice demands, the Anti-Racist Design Justice Index with lists of anti-racist practices and actions for organizations, academics, and local governments organized by color into gradient chart designs. There is also a “how-to” guide for conducting racial justice dialogue in an academic setting. The last page of the issue begins with the heading “WE ARE DESIGN AS PROTEST” and concludes at the bottom with “ARE YOU WITH US?” In between is a listing of contributing members of the DAP team and a large black graphic depicting the north star and scattered white texts with messages of solidarity. There are sixteen pages total.
