Description
An Adobe Illustrator file (2022.14.1) and PDF (2022.14.2) of design elevations for a series entitled Uneasy Lies the Head that Wears the Crown, by Germane Barnes.
The design drawing depicts six blue and gray chair designs arranged in two rows of three. Each chair design features a chairback designed to look like an Afro pick with seven, elongated teeth that extend downwards, terminating just above the floor. The combs and teeth are illustrated in textured gray that resembles wood grain and the teeth are also shaded blue to show perspective. The shaft of the combs differ in size and shape. Each design also features blue outlined, white, slatted chair seats as well as white arms, legs, and aprons. The elevation for each design is printed in blue text with thin blue lines around each illustration that record the measurements of the overall height of the chairs, the height and width of the comb shaft neck rests and backrests, the width of the neck rests, and the height and width of the chair frame below the backrests. All of the measurements are recorded in feet and inches.
Each elevation features a different neck rest/backrest design on the throne chair. On the top row, from left to right: a curvilinear design, inspired by the classic Afro pick; a double, stacked, semicircular design, inspired by Junkanoo Band headgear; a center conical shape framed on each side by five, shorter comb tips. On the bottom row, from left to right: a floral motif of five disk floret shapes stacked in a pyramidal arrangement; a leaf and vine design with two center leaf shapes framed by curving vines; a double Adinkra duafe comb design with the combs attached at the spine to mirror each other.
