Description
A color photograph of Mokgadi Caster Semenya captured by Dana Scruggs for Out magazine. The photograph of Semenya, taken in Seattle, Washington, depicts her standing on a running track.
Semenya is shown from the waist up, facing the viewer, and standing with her arms resting at her sides. She is wearing a yellow, mesh, tank top with a chevron pattern at the center and a black Nike logo over her proper left breast. She has a protective hairstyle with her hair braided into thin cornrows, arranged in a wave patterns on the proper left side of her scalp. Her cornrow ends are braided into loose, neck length braids. She has a diamond stud in her proper right ear and she is also wearing a short, silver tone, metal chain necklace with a small, silver tone, Africa-shaped pendant. She is smiling widely with her tongue sticking out over her lower lip. In the background is a reddish brown running track, lined by a fence. On the right is a scoreboard and there is a line of trees in the distant background.
The photograph has an uneven, thick, white border because the image is printed off center. Black text printed vertically along the bottom left edge of the image reads [Substrate: Hahnemuhle Ultrasmooth] below partially cropped text. Black text printed vertically along the bottom right edge of the image reads [File: DS_ Caster_Semenya_Out_VOG_20x26_Final.tif I Date: 10.05.2022 10:16:54 / Printer: EPSON SC-P200x0 RGB / Substrate: Hahnemuhle Ultrasmooth].
The verso is plain white. In the bottom left quadrant, is the artist’s signature, the print’s edition number, and print date handwritten in black ink that reads [Dana Scruggs / 1/7 + 2 AP / 2022[underlined]].
