Description
A CBS program produced by Bergen Community College with the title African Americans in Suburbia: The Connection of Race, Class and the Middle Landscape. It consists of a single white DVD with the program title, date and college logo printed on it.
The program opens with Professor Maureen Ellis Davis offering comments on the importance of Black history and the development of Black History Month. She then passes the podium to Dr. Philip Dolce who presents the opening remarks and introduces the panelists. They are Arnold E. Brown, Deidre Rice-Reese, and Estina Baker. Some of the topics addressed in the discussion include why have African Americans been moving to suburbia since the 1960s; how have African Americans shaped the suburban environment; has recent suburbanization weakened, strengthen, or divided the Black community as a whole; why is there a gender disparity between Black women and men and what is its importance; what institutions and organizations have been important in building the Black community in suburbia; as African Americans become more affluent, do they still rely on the services of these organizations; is there a movement of emerging Black leadership in suburbia; has racial bias/profiling and segregation ended with the movement of blacks to suburbia; how strong was the civil rights movement in Bergen County; is there a civil rights agenda for suburbia today, why have some African Americans been moving back to the South.
