- Description
- A hardcover book (2023.30.1a) with a dust jacket (2023.30.1b), “Morning Haiku” is a haiku poetry book written by Sonia Sanchez. The haikus commemorate the lives of leading Black cultural figures including Max Roach, Maya Angelou, Odetta, Richard Long, Toni Morrison, Rosa Parks, and Shirely Chisholm, among others. The dust jacket has a background of a light blue color with several white lines running across the cover. Three black-and-white vertical photographs of Sanchez dancing are placed in the middle of the cover. Black typeface at the top reads [morning haiku] / [Sonia Sanchez]. At the bottom in black typeface is [“Sonia Sanchez is a lion in a literature’s forest. When she writes she roars, and when she sleeps other creatures walk gingerly.” – Maya Angelou].
