Description
A black-and-white vintage silver gelatin photograph titled “Husband and Wife, Sunday Morning, Detroit, Michigan” by Gordon Parks. The photograph captures wife and husband Pauline Collins (née Terry) and Bert Collins.
The couple is photographed side-by-side with Bert on the left and Pauline on the right, their arms intertwined on their way to Sunday morning worship service at Macedonian Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Bert is wearing a dark color suit with a circle-design tie and pens in his proper left suit pocket. He has cigar in his mouth and is wearing dark frame glasses and a boater hat with a black ribbon around the crown. With his proper right hand, Bert is carrying two books, one of them a well-used Bible. Pauline is wearing a dark color dress with light color hem around the sleeves and neckline and light color buttons. She is wearing a small, pleated hat with tulle and circular stud earrings. The photograph was taken on the sidewalk, houses are seen on the right, a road to the left, with trees behind them and people in the back. The photographer signed the back of the photograph in black ink [Gordon Parks].
Pauline and photographer Parks were both members of the 12-student graduating Class of 1927 at a segregated school called Plaza School in Fort Scott, Kansas. The photograph was part of Parks’ assignment from LIFE magazine.
