Domino used this Musicians’ Union Manual as a member of American Federation of Musicians Local 496 from the period between 1948 and 1949, just before his December 1949 recording of “The Fat Man” inaugurated the new genre of rock ‘n’ roll. The manual features Domino’s signature along with ten pages of his handwritten notes, providing a valuable snapshot of his musical activities in the period immediately preceding his international fame as a rock ‘n’ roll pioneer.
Description
A New Orleans musicians' union manual issued by the American Federation of Musicians Local 174 for 1948-1949. The 48-page manual has the original blue printed covers and is center bound with two metal staples. Black text on the front cover reads [PRICE LIST / and / CONDITIONS] at the top, followed by a listing of the price list committee and information for Local 174. On the front inside cover is the signature of Fats Domino: [Antoine Domino]. Preceding the index are ten pages of notes by Domino made in pencil (pages 37-45). The notes include instructions for recording gigs ("Write in there or here on start day for out of town shows") and a listing of venues in the 9th ward (Hideaway, Robin Hood, Green Room). There is loss to the upper right corners of the last ten pages and mild wear from regular use throughout.
