- Description
- The August 1966 issue of The Movement newspaper published by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee of California. Printed in black ink on off-white newsprint paper, the newspaper has eight (8) pages total and features text, photographs, and illustrations throughout.
- The front page of the newspaper has the title of the newspaper at the top left side appearing in the negative space amid a black background. Below the title is a graphic of a black hand shaking a white hand. The cover story is an article entitled [A Night with the Watts Community Alert Patrol] by Terence Cannon, which discusses Community Alert Patrol’s history and actions. There is also a column by Harry Brill in the lower left corner regarding urban renewal and Hunters Point public housing in San Francisco. The interior contents include editorials, political cartoons, a feature article about solidarity between the Hispanic community of East Los Angeles and the African American community of Watts, a column by Stokely Carmichael, an illustrated graphic on the origins of the Black Power movement, and articles on politics and current events. The back page has an article about sanctions against South Africa at the top and on the bottom half, an article titled “When Federal Troops Seated Negroes in the Georgia Legislature” about Federal support of the 14th and 15th Amendments during Reconstruction accompanied by an illustration.
