- Description
- A black-and-white photograph of a boxing match between Jack Johnson and Kid Cutler at Lauer’s Park ball field in Reading, Pennsylvania. The action shot shows the two sparring in an outdoor ring, dust rising from their feet. Johnson and Cutler are captured in profile, facing each other, their gloved hands entangled between them. Both wear boxing tights and singlets, Cutler’s in all black and Johnson in a white singlet, black tights, and a striped fabric sash at the waist. To the left are three men watching the fight from the field, all in dark suits and light hats. A fourth man, dressed in a black top hat and waist coat, appears to be walking at the right side of the image. The billboards and bleachers of the park, as well as the city buildings behind them, are visible in the far background.
- On the verso are two handwritten inscriptions in graphite, one faded to be mostly illegible and a second added in a stronger hand to read together [Johnson ? + Kid Cutler of Chicago]. There is also a stamp for “Sain News Service” and “Culver Service,” both of New York.
