- Description
- A copy of Impact Magazine, Vol. 4, a special issue on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the event.
- The front cover of the magazine is primarily black with the magazine’s title, [IMPACT] printed in large white letters inside a thick white frame in the shape of the state of Oklahoma. Small white text printed below the masthead reads [VOLUME 4 JUNE – JULY ISSUE FIFTY CENTS]. The bottom two-thirds of the cover has a color image of flames surrounding white text reading [The Disaster / Of The 1921 / RACE RIOT]. The back cover of the magazine is an advertisement for Sears, Roebuck, and Company.
- The magazine has forty interior pages with articles and advertisements, black-and-white photographs, color photographs, and graphics. On page two is the magazine’s masthead, printed in black text in a red box along the left edge of the page. Printed in red on the right is the publication date, [SPECIAL JUNE – JULY ISSUE ], with the dedication printed in red text below [THIS ISSUE / DEDICATED TO / COMMEMORATE THE / 50th ANNIVERSARY / OF THE TULSA / RACE RIOT]. Printed below is the table of contents with the following article titles: [Greenwood Is Fading], [Lesson In Black History], [Profile Of A Race Riot], [Monument To Patience], [Impact Raps With], [Raw Humor]. Page 13-30 is the main story, “Profile of a Race Riot,” by Ed Wheeler. The first page of the has the same burning design as the magazine cover, with large white text reading [PROFILE / OF A / RACE / RIOT]. The article recounts the events of the Tulsa race massacre that began with the arrent of Dick Rowland on May 30, 1921 and the ensuing race riot and massacre that took place between May 31 and June 1, 1921. The article also includes black-and-white photographs of the white crowds gathered at the courthouse, looters and rioters, and images of the massacre's aftermath, including images of those killed. Page 28 of the article has the same flame design as on page 13, but the text reads [IT / HAPPENED / IN / TULSA / 50 YEARS / AGO], followed by a section on the destruction of Mt. Zion Baptist Church during the massacre.
