Description
Canadian National Exhibition Athletic Day second place medal for the 1 Mile Relay event awarded to Eulace Peacock in 1939. The medal consists of a silver toned pin holding a red, white, and blue striped ribbon attached to a medal. The pin has a “C” clasp closure on the back and a bar that holds the ribbon. The ribbons are crimped to the front of the bar at each corner. Attached to the bottom of the ribbon is a silver medal held in place with two (2) jump rings. The medal is hexagonal shaped, scalloped and stepped at the top and bottom, and has a round jump ring threaded through the bezel that is attached to the jump ring hanging from the bottom of the ribbon. In the center of the obverse of the medal is a full length, relief depiction of a goddess. Her body is facing forward and her head is turned towards the left edge of the medal. Her proper right arm is extended and she is holding a laurel wreath. Behind her is a large Canadian flag, enameled in blue and red. Relief text above the figure reads, [CANADIAN NATIONAL EXHIBITION]. To the left of the figure’s legs is the relief text [ATHLETIC DAY]. Below the figure is the relief depiction of a maple leaf with a spray of leaves extending from the left edge, and five-pointed stars extending from the right. A small arch is depicted to the right of the figure. At the top of the medal is an oval with the text [1939] in blue enamel. At the bottom on the medal is a blue enameled triangle with the letters [CNE] inlayed in silver. The reverse of the medal is engraved with text that reads, [2ND / 1 MILE RELAY]. Along the bottom edge is a stamped maker’s mark for Birks Ellis that reads [BIRKS ELLIS / STERLING / H[?]].
