This streamer belonged to General Colin Powell and was awarded for his participation in the Southwest Asia theater of operations during the Gulf War. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell oversaw the U.S. military's response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, including Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. The three bronze stars indicate participation in the three authorized campaigns, including Defense of Saudi Arabia, Liberation and Defense of Kuwait, and Southwest Asia Cease-Fire.
Campaign streamers, also called battle streamers, are attached to military flags to recognize participation in a military event or the award of a military commendation.
Description
A Southwest Asia Service streamer owned by General Colin L. Powell. This forked lengthy rayon battle streamer was awarded to General Powell for his leadership, as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in the Southwest Asia theater of operations from 1990 until his retirement in 1993. The streamer is designed with double-sided horizontal colors and features a tan background with a black border and skinny black stripe through a dark green center. On each side of the green center are groupings of red, white, and blue stripes. Three (3) dark bronze silks stars are embroidered across the center. A brass grommet hole for hanging is positioned at the center top end of the streamer. There are no additional stars embroidered on the reverse of the streamer.
